THE ANALEMMATIC sundial This sundial has been included by popular demand. More often than not when one finds how much work is entailed in making it, another type more easily constructed is substituted. However, the chief use of an analemmatic sundial, is in conjunction with a portable horizontal sundial to enable it to be set properly without the use of a meridian line. This is accomplished by placing both sundials on the same Figure. The horizontal sundial uses a sloping gnomon which records the hours in respect to the distance of the sun from the meridian, whereas the analemmatic sundial makes use of a movable vertical pin which can be set for each day in the year, thus recording the time with respect to the azimuth of the sun (angular distance on horizon between south point and the foot of the perpendicular from the sun to the horizon). If the combination sundial is placed on a level surface, the pin on the analemmatic sundial set opposite the proper day; then the whole turned so that the time shown by both sundials agrees, the horizontal sundial will be in its proper position.
